dear internet,
should i give up coffee? i love GOOD coffee, but all i seem to drink is chemical sludge these days, because that's all the office machine has and there's no time to get anything better. not to mention it costs a porsche for a cappucino. and someone once said giving up caffeine had health benefits..

Give up coffee (sweet giver of life) - that is crazy talk. If you have room on your desk, you can get what I use: a Senseo. It uses the coffee pods and makes very good coffee. It doesn't take up much space, but you would need to have an extra outlet to plug it into. It costs about 60-70 bucks and the pods are available at most grocery stores (3-4 bucks a bag for 16-18 pods). Then you can have good coffee anytime you want it.

Note: it's idea of a "cup" of coffee is four ounces and it is a pretty strong four ounces. I prefer to put in one pod, but push the "two cup" button which makes an 8 ounce cup of not too strong, not too weak coffee...depends on your prefernce, though.

If you are into the fancy stuff, you can order specialty pods from places like http://www.podhead.com/

PS: Don't get suckered into the slighly lower priced HomeCafe - cause it and the coffee that it makes suck.

I had to give up... I realised it was a large contributing factor in my anxiety attacks...

If you must replace the addiction, get a junk habit. There's no point doing things by halves, right?

Volpone, one of these days you're going to have a bad influence on someone . . . (Question: Volpone, should I jump off a cliff? Volpone: . . . only if it isn't a small cliff.

I also think, piggy that you need to start drinking tea. It's so much better for you.

I drink a lot of green tea, and generally prefer the bulk kind from the health food store/ tea shop so that I can use a teaball to get my preferred cup strength . . . though Celestial Seasonings does make a decent green tea, if at all possible, seek out a tea shop in your area and taste test to find your favorite in your price range (some can be very expensive).

high five to solitaryascidian. I gave up caffeine a number of years ago as well (with many lapses during exam weeks since then). Once I got over the horrific headaches of withdrawal I felt much better than I had in a while. Easier to wake up, easier to go to sleep, etc. Replace coffee with orange juice!

i never had withdrawl, so maybe i'm not such a hero. i used to drink coffee in industrial quantities, though, and always without effects. i only got excited once when i used 5 soup-spoons to make a single cup. then it was 16 hours awake.
i had a lapse this year. it was exam week, i didn't sleep to study, and the next afternoon i slept on class. i had to go and buy some coffee to stay awake on the second past of the class.

Yogi Tea is very good - they have a yummy antioxidant green tea. To diversify you can have green tea with lemongrass or with jasmine or with chamomile or just add some honey. But I'd still have the occasional good espresso, cappuccino or latte should the opportunity arise - never turn down a really good coffee, you'll regret it. ;o) Chai is a good latte replacement too. Especially good when it's cool and grey out.

You could also just become a coffee snob and only drink the coffee you roast and brew yourself. Overall inexpensive and you are assured of the quality.

Or just cut down on your general coffee intake - drink the good stuff and alternate with tea every other day. And throwing in a small square of some good dark chocolate is highly recommended!

you guys are my heros. i decided to cut out caffeine slowly.. first one day between coffees, then 2 coffee-free days followed by a coffee on the third day, now it's 3 coffee-free days ahead. it's getting easier, though i must admit the headaches are a pain in the butt. or head. whatever, i can't think straight. need caffeine..
