Darling Internet,
Warm and fuzzy occasion! The little girl that I've been babysitting since she was 3 months old is now 2 years old and being baptised this Sunday. I've been invited, but there's one slight problem. I don't know what to get as a gift! I've never been to a baptism before and am not sure what's appropriate, not to mention she's 2, likes ladybugs, books, and such.... Soooo, please help?
Anxiously,
Magpie

Dearest magpie: it depends largely on budget. I was always brought up to understand Wedgewood for a baptism. Or a good 'collected tales/ fairy story' hardback glossy book. (Actually a Bible is hugely suitable but oh so boring and I never give them - someone is sure to!). Possibly jewellery, maybe a small enamelled ladybird (English for ladybug) on a silver chain? Something that will last through the ages.
Oh wait, just noticed the paint a picture frame option! Yes, do that! It sounds beautiful, personal, perfect! :)!
Have a lovely time on Saturday!
Last time I went to a baptism, I bought a (small) silver money box - a traditional gift, a toy for the child in question, and something for her older sister so she didn't feel left out.
I just wrote a very long comment and then realized that it says exactly what littlewolf's said (except for the Wedgewood), so I deleted it. I second the picture frame idea!
I find that 2-year-olds really like backpacks - they love having a private place for their treasures, and a way to tote them around. I'm sure you could find a nice canvas one with all sorts of amusing zippy pockets. It's a thought.
