dear internet,

would it bother you if it was your birthday but your significant other didn't get you a present? and i mean honestly, without all that "birthdays-are-so-commercial-these-days" stuff. c'mon, would it bug you?

    It would bug me, but I am terrible at remembering dates, especially birthdays. So unless I had reminded him a few times that it was coming up (which I tend to do, since I myself am so prone to forgetting) then I would probably forgive him.

    It would bug me no end! In fact, that could lead to one of our very rare Big Fights. I always try to put all the creative effort I can muster into the birthday presents for my SO, and I do kinda expect the same from him. I love birthdays and I always want them to be special days, so presents are very important.

    One exception, though: If he had a really good excuse or explanation, I'd be prepared to go without a present. And one caveat: Most really good presents you can't buy in shops, and things like a self-made birthday cake etc. are perfectly good presents.

    my step father forgot my mother's birthday (half birthday, actually) this year and she has not let him forget it . . . I almost feel bad for him at this point.

    Really it's on the present so much as it is the thought.
